Tolstoy vs Shopify native video
Shopify has supported product video for years, so the honest question is whether you need anything else. The answer turns on two things its documentation makes clear: the native player cannot tag products, and Shopify reports no video metrics at all.
What Shopify native video is
Shopify’s built-in product media video: upload video to a product and it renders in the theme gallery, with no app required.
Who Shopify native video is a good fit for
Any store that wants a straightforward product video in the gallery. It is free, it is already there, and for a single explainer video per product it is genuinely enough.
Included with Shopify. Limits are 1GB per file, 10 minutes, up to 4K, and a maximum of 250 media items per product.

Why brands move from Shopify native video to Tolstoy
You cannot measure it. Shopify’s reporting documentation contains no video metric — no views, no watch time, no video-attributed revenue — so native product video is unattributable by construction.
The player is a player, not a storefront. Shopify’s video tag exposes playback controls and nothing else: no product tagging, no overlay, no call to action on the video itself.
Editing and reuse are manual. The media editor only replaces thumbnails, external hosting is limited to YouTube and Vimeo, and Shop post media cannot be changed after publishing.

Tolstoy vs Shopify native video FAQ
Shopify already lets me upload product video. Why would I need an app?
If you want one video per product and do not need to know whether it sold anything, you do not. An app earns its place when you want the video to be shoppable, to be tested, to be measured against revenue, and to be reused across other surfaces.
What are Shopify’s actual video limits?
Up to 1GB per file, 10 minutes long, up to 4K resolution, and a maximum of 250 media items per product. Shop posts are tighter: two minutes and 100MB, and the media cannot be changed after publishing.
Can I see whether my product videos drove sales?
Not natively — Shopify’s analytics documentation lists no video metric of any kind. Tolstoy reports views, engagement, and revenue per placement so you can see which asset is carrying the page.
Can I trim or edit a video inside Shopify?
No. Shopify’s media editor can replace a video’s thumbnail but cannot trim, crop, or rotate it. Tolstoy includes an editor for stitching, trimming, overlays, and titles.
