Build a product finder quiz

Tolstoy builds a branching product finder quiz from your catalog, so shoppers answer a few questions and end on the products that fit their needs.

Works with: Shopify, Klaviyo (optional), Attentive (optional)

Recommended products shown to a shopper as a complete look

What you need

  • The goal of the quiz, for example the right shade, size, routine or strength
  • The product choices the quiz must separate, from your connected catalog
  • A connected Klaviyo or Attentive account, if quiz answers should start a marketing flow (optional)

What you get

  • A quiz with branching questions, results and product recommendations, unpublished until you approve it
  • Saved answers for each shopper, which you can review in Tolstoy
  • Quiz analytics: views, completions, completion rate, answer and result distribution, product clicks and email submits

How it runs

Tolstoy runs this playbook in 5 steps.

  1. Define the results

You and the agent set the outcomes first, each with a title, short copy and recommended products, or advice and a link when no product fits.

  2. Write the questions

The agent drafts questions whose answers lead to the next question, straight to a result or to a link.

  3. Map answers to results

Each result gets answer conditions, and the first result is the fallback when no condition matches, so the safest recommendation goes first.

  4. Set email capture

You choose email capture off, optional or required; with Klaviyo connected, the quiz sends email submitted, quiz completed and CTA clicked events.

  5. Test every path

The agent builds an unpublished draft and walks through each path in the preview.

Check the result

  • Walk every path in the preview: each one ends on a result, and no answer leads back to a question already asked.
  • Read each result: the products fit the answers that lead to it, and the copy uses only facts from your catalog.
  • Pick answers that match no result: the quiz shows the first result, and that result is a safe choice for any shopper.

Know the limits

  • Publishing needs your confirmation. Then you add the Tolstoy Builder block where the quiz should show in the Shopify theme editor and paste the embed code.
  • Answers go to Klaviyo or Attentive only when the shopper gives an email and the account is connected. You build the follow-up flow in your email platform.

When to use this playbook

Use it when shoppers keep asking some version of “which one is right for me?” in chat, support or reviews, or when products look alike but suit different needs: shades, skin types, sizes or strengths. A quiz asks those questions on the page and ends with a short list of products instead of the full collection. For other widgets that answer a shopper question on the page, read how to create custom Shopify widgets with AI, from PDP stories to product finders.

Get better results

  • Use the words your customers use. Take answer wording from support tickets and reviews, not from internal product codes.
  • Turn on email capture only when you have a flow ready to use the answers.
  • After launch, check the result distribution. A result that almost nobody reaches may have conditions that are too strict.

The prompt

“Run this playbook” opens Tolstoy with this prompt as a draft. Pick your products, edit anything, then send it.

Build a product finder quiz for my store with the Interactive Quiz template. Start from the results: for each result, write a title, short copy and the products it recommends from my connected catalog. Then draft a short set of questions with answers that lead to those results, and use branching only where it changes the outcome. If I have not told you the goal of the quiz or the product choices it must separate, ask me for those first. Use only product facts from my catalog; do not invent benefits, ingredients, results or reviews. Put the safest general recommendation first, because it is the fallback result. Ask whether I want email capture off, optional or required. Build an unpublished draft and walk through every path in the preview. Do not publish without my approval.

FAQ

How do I build a product finder quiz for Shopify?

Start from the results, not the questions. List the product choices the quiz must separate, write one result for each, then keep only the questions that help choose between them. Tolstoy builds the quiz from those results and your connected catalog.

Can I change the questions after the quiz is live?

Yes. Questions, answers, results and products are stored in the quiz settings, not in the widget code, so you ask the agent to change them. Keep existing answers where you can, because replacing them resets saved shopper progress.

Where do the shopper answers go?

Answers are saved in Tolstoy for each shopper. If the shopper gives an email and Klaviyo or Attentive is connected, the quiz can send the answers there as an event. For logged-in shoppers, answers can also be saved to their Shopify customer record.

Run it on your own catalog
